I think I literally saw over a dozen references as I scanned my feeds this morning.&nbsp; In my experience, the site is still having rather frequent and severe performance\/availability problems, and I&#8217;m only tentatively sold on the notion, but I&#8217;m getting kinda into it.&nbsp; In particular, I think its opportunity to provide super-lightweight transport-flexible connectivity could unlock all kinds of creative uses for ubiquitous connectivity.&nbsp; If that is indeed the direction this goes, we&#8217;ve just scratched the surface of the <a href=\"http:\/\/franticindustries.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/04\/all-twitter-tools-and-mashups-in-one-place\/\">mash-ups and other sorts of info-feed integrations<\/a> twitter should enable.&nbsp; Things like <a href=\"http:\/\/geotwitter.org\/\">geotwitter<\/a> are neat novelties, but aren&#8217;t going to change my daily habits, which seems to me to be the definition of this being The Next Big Thing that&#8217;s been predicted.&nbsp; The meta-view of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitterverse.com\/\">twitterverse<\/a> is interesting (as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mappr.com\/\">mappr<\/a> is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\">flickr<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/zeitgeist.html\">zeitgeist<\/a> is to google), but again amounts to little more than another gee-whiz shiny thing on the intarweb.&nbsp; Crassly commercial as it may be, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/woot\">twitter\/woot<\/a> strikes me as a closer example of how twitter could become the centerpiece of a new information ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li>Social networking is trending to eclipse pr0n in as %age of Internet &quot;site visits&quot; (details <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/research\/articlesBySubject\/displayStory.cfm?story_id=9040354&amp;subjectID=526352&amp;fsrc=nwl&amp;emailauth=%2527%2527%255E%255C%252DI%255CK%2527TQ24%250A\">here<\/a> if you have an Economist subscription).&nbsp; As pointed out in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computers.net\/2007\/04\/social_networki.html\">this<\/a> commentary, though, lots of social networking is used for sex&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxjournal.com\/node\/1000213\">apparently<\/a> continues the &quot;open source infringes patents&quot; form of FUD.&nbsp; Honestly, I&#8217;ve largely stopped paying attention.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/history\">Google history<\/a> is offering to <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/your-slice-of-web.html\">track all of your browsing for you<\/a>.&nbsp; Erm, I think I&#8217;ll pass for now.&nbsp; I think both their reasons for wanting to do this and my hesitation to let them do it are fairly obvious on the surface.&nbsp; Ironically, it&#8217;s mostly the the ability of google search to pretty reliably conjure up whatever old link I might want that makes this service feel like an unnecessary intrusion.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of google, they&#8217;ve apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2007\/04\/20\/google-acquires-marratech-gets-into-webex-territory\/\">acquired their way into the online meeting space<\/a>.&nbsp; I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m not alone in welcoming the possibility of a google-quality WebEx alternative.&nbsp; No linux version at the moment, unfortunately&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>As a token earth day nod, I&#8217;ll pass along Make magazine&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makezine.com\/blog\/archive\/2007\/04\/modified_ink_printer_chur.html?CMP=OTC-0D6B48984890\">link<\/a> to New Scientist&#8217;s coverage of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientisttech.com\/article\/dn11632-modified-ink-printer-churns-out-electronic-circuits.html\">working prototype of a desktop printer modified to print circuits<\/a>!&nbsp; This is potentially really exciting &#8212; I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/del.icio.us\/netfluvia\/pcb\">started to do the homework<\/a> to make custom PCBs at home, and the traditional techniques look both relatively cumbersome and very nasty, from a materials-required point of view.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s an absolutely beautiful day <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;layer=&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;om=1&amp;z=16&amp;ll=42.966708,-88.083401&amp;spn=0.008919,0.014699&amp;t=k\">here<\/a>, so I think I&#8217;ll go AFK for a bit and enjoy the fresh air with my family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miscellaneous trappings of my morning spent reading RSS feeds: As I recently tweeted, twitter is everywhere in this weekend&#8217;s news.&nbsp;
